The International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup Short Track Speed Skating series opened in Beijing on Thursday as skaters look to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics next February.

This year's World Cup consists of four stops starting in the Chinese capital of Beijing, with 232 skaters from 37 countries and regions to take part in the nine-event competition at the Beijing-based Capital Indoor Stadium, the official competition venue for the next year's Winter Olympics.

The Chinese team - six men and six women, including Olympic champion Wu Dajing and rising star Ren Ziwei, will compete in the four-day competition.

Following the Beijing stop at the Olympic rink, the World Cup 2021/22 season will move on to Nagoya, Japan (Oct 28-31) before the action heads to Europe -- first in Debrecen, Hungary (Nov 18-21) and then concluding in Dordrecht, the Netherlands (Nov 25-28).

The season is the first full campaign after the World Short Track Speed Skating Championship events were disrupted by COVID-19 in 2020.

The test events for the Beijing Winter Olympics, starting on Oct 5, will be held in eight ice and snow competition venues in Beijing and Zhangjiakou, north China's Hebei Province, in the next three months till December 31.

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is scheduled to take place from February 4 to 20 next year, with the Paralympics due to follow from March 4 to 13. Competitions will be staged in three main clusters: downtown Beijing, Beijing's Yanqing District, and Zhangjiakou of Hebei Province.
